The Nirvana Video Vanguard Award announcement confirms what has been clear for three decades: the band’s visual legacy is as durable as its recorded one. At the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, Nirvana will accept the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, presented to musicians and directors who have made a profound impact on the art form of music videos. It is one of the VMAs’ most weighted honours, and it arrives with a back catalogue of clips (‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, ‘Come As You Are’, ‘Heart-Shaped Box’) that rewired how rock music looked on screen.
The ceremony takes place on 27 September in Los Angeles, airing live on both coasts at 8-10 p.m. ET / 5-7 p.m. PT across MTV, CBS, and Paramount+. According to Billboard, this will be the first time the VMAs have been held in the Los Angeles area since 2017, giving the evening a certain homecoming weight for a band whose influence radiates through virtually every rock act that followed them out of the early 1990s.
Nirvana’s Long History With the VMAs
The band’s relationship with the ceremony runs deep. Nirvana won their first trophies in 1992, taking home Best New Artist and Best Alternative Video for ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. That same night, they defied network censors by opening their performance with a passage of ‘Rape Me’ before pivoting into ‘Lithium’, one of the more combative gestures in VMA history. The following year they returned to collect Best Alternative Video for ‘In Bloom’.
Then, in September 1994, the ceremony took on a different register entirely. Kurt Cobain had died the previous April, and Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic returned to the stage to accept two awards for the ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ video: Best Alternative Video and Best Art Direction. It was a quiet, strange moment in a ceremony not typically given to quiet or strangeness. The Nirvana Video Vanguard Award, in some respects, closes a loop that night left open.
Grohl continued his VMAs presence into the following decade. After Nirvana disbanded, he went on to win Best Group Video in 1996 with Foo Fighters for ‘Big Me’, which speaks to the generational reach of the musicians who passed through the band.
An Award With Considerable Company
The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award has been collected by Beyoncé, Rihanna, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake among its 2010s recipients. More recently, Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, and Shakira have accepted it. Nirvana’s place on that list reflects a different kind of visual sensibility from most of those names: where many Vanguard recipients built careers partly on elaborate, high-budget spectacle, Nirvana’s most enduring clips, the gymnasium chaos of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, the underwater drift of ‘Come As You Are’, worked through atmosphere and unease as much as production value. The results have proven no less lasting.
Beyond their award-winning videos, Nirvana’s catalogue includes further widely-viewed clips: ‘You Know You’re Right’, ‘Silver’, and ‘Dumb’ among them, all released through Geffen Records.
Who Else Is Competing on the Night
The broader 2026 VMAs field is dominated by Madonna, who leads all nominees with 11 nominations. Taylor Swift follows with nine nominations. Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each earned seven nominations, with Bruno Mars on six. Whether any of those campaigns can command the room the way a posthumous Nirvana tribute tends to is another question entirely, but the nominations list suggests the ceremony will carry plenty of competitive weight before the Vanguard presentation arrives.
The 2026 VMAs air live on 27 September, with the LA broadcast marking the show’s first return to the city in nearly a decade according to Billboard.
