The moment that fans of Kacey Musgraves and Troye Sivan had quietly been hoping for finally arrived on 1 September, when Sivan walked out 13 songs into Musgraves’ second sold-out night at Madison Square Garden to perform their 2020 collaboration ‘Easy’ live for the first time. The Kacey Musgraves Troye Sivan Easy pairing had existed only on record for five years, which made the appearance feel less like a surprise cameo and more like the settling of an old, pleasant debt.
A Collaboration Four Years in the Making
‘Easy’ originally appeared on Sivan’s EP In a Dream, with Musgraves contributing her vocals alongside producer Mark Ronson on a subsequent remix. The song was also the subject of a Bardia Zeinali-directed video in which Musgraves and Sivan played friends on the run, a visual that leant the track a breezy, almost cinematic warmth. The two had first collaborated a year earlier on ‘Glittery’, written for the 2019 television special The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show, so by the time ‘Easy’ surfaced in 2020 there was already a genuine creative rapport between them.
That rapport was visible offstage as well. Sivan posted a TikTok clip of the pair backstage, lip-syncing to his recent single ‘She’s the Best’, the kind of low-key, unguarded moment that tends to be more revealing about an artistic friendship than any formal statement.
Dolly, Philadelphia and the Heart of the Woods Foundation
The second MSG show differed from the first in one quietly charged respect. The night before, Musgraves had performed Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’, a tribute coloured by the fact that she referenced Parton as a friend and mentor whose death she acknowledged last week. On the 1 September date, she made no such performance, though the reference to Parton remained present in her remarks to the crowd. These are the kinds of small decisions, what to play and what to hold back, that give a live show its particular texture.
The tour, in support of her latest album Middle of Nowhere, continues with a date in Philadelphia before running through to 27 October in Seattle. The run gives Musgraves a considerable stretch of nights in which to refine a set that already carries both emotional weight and the kind of guest-appearance elasticity that keeps audiences attentive.
Separate from the tour, Musgraves yesterday launched the Heart of the Woods Foundation, which she describes as ‘committed to supporting the many causes that are dear to my heart. I strongly believe music has a way of bringing people together, and I hope this foundation can help do the same.’ As an opening gesture, she has partnered with Propeller to offer one winner and a guest tickets to her 8 October concert in Austin, Texas.
Last month brought a different kind of announcement. Musgraves introduced a limited-edition product called Drought Drops, a water-based lubricant and vaginal moisturiser developed in partnership with women’s wellness brand Medicine Mama. The product takes its cue from her single ‘Dry Spell’, which reframes romantic drought as something almost danceable. The branding is characteristically Musgraves: self-aware, lightly irreverent, and rooted in the emotional logic of her music rather than detached from it.
Taken together, the MSG nights, the foundation launch, and the Kacey Musgraves Troye Sivan Easy live debut sketch out an artist operating across several registers at once, using a sold-out arena run as the occasion for both personal generosity and a kind of quiet stocktaking. The tour’s next date in Philadelphia arrives tomorrow.
