There is a single telling detail at the centre of the new version of ‘Uncertain, TX’: the Kacey Musgraves Intocable collaboration finds Musgraves singing entirely in Spanish, harmonising with lead singer Ricky Javier Muñoz across a track that has already climbed to No. 1 at Texas Radio, according to Rolling Stone. That is not a small gesture. It is a full linguistic commitment, and it says something about how seriously Musgraves is pursuing the borderland between country music and the Tejano and Norteño traditions that have long shaped Texas culture.
The original ‘Uncertain, TX’ appeared on Musgraves’ latest album, Middle of Nowhere, with Willie Nelson guesting on the studio version. That pairing situated the song squarely within a romanticised Texas lineage. The re-recording, released with the Zapata, TX-based Intocable, pulls in a different direction: warmer, more rhythmically supple, rooted in the accordion-driven textures of Música Mexicana rather than the open-highway country of the original. The two versions are not competing with one another; they are in conversation.
A Rare Outside Collaboration for Intocable
For Intocable, this is a rare step outside their own world. The group has built a career spanning nearly 35 years and stands as one of the most influential acts in Tejano and Norteño music, with two Grammy wins to their name. Collaborating with an English-speaking country artist of Musgraves’ profile is unusual for them, which makes the fit all the more considered. Musgraves, for her part, was unambiguous about what the pairing meant to her personally. ‘Having a song with the legends of Intocable is such a thrill for me,’ she said. ‘As a Texan, I am proud of the cultural melting pot that makes our state so great.’
That pride is not incidental to the project. Middle of Nowhere has been built, in part, around the musical traditions that connect Texas, country music and the Mexican-American borderlands. ‘Uncertain, TX’ is one of the album’s more explicit gestures in that direction, and the Intocable version deepens it by bringing in collaborators who carry that tradition in their bones rather than approaching it from the outside.
The Kacey Musgraves Intocable Track Follows a Pattern of Cross-Genre Reach
This is not the first time Musgraves has reached across the country-Latin divide. Rolling Stone notes that she previously collaborated with Carin León on the bilingual track ‘Lost in Translation’, a pairing that drew on León’s prominence within that space. Taken together, these collaborations suggest something more sustained than a one-off experiment: Musgraves has been building a body of work that treats the Texas-Mexico musical corridor as a genuinely shared territory rather than a colour to be borrowed.
The commercial logic is there too. ‘Uncertain, TX’ reaching the top of Texas Radio demonstrates that the audience for this kind of crossover is real and attentive. Regional Texas radio has its own ecosystem, its own hierarchies of taste, and landing at No. 1 there is not something that happens by accident or goodwill alone. The Kacey Musgraves Intocable recording evidently found its listeners.
On Tour and Heading Into Awards Season
Musgraves is currently midway through her 34-date Middle of Nowhere tour, which was scheduled to continue on 6 October in Houston before wrapping across two nights on 26 and 27 October in Seattle. She arrives at the CMA Awards on 18 November in Nashville carrying five nominations, among them Album of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year, both of which reflect the scale of the reception Middle of Nowhere has received.
Earlier in the awards cycle, Musgraves appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards to deliver a cover of ‘I Will Always Love You’ as a tribute to Dolly Parton, a close friend. That moment was one register of her public presence; the Intocable collaboration is quite another. One looks backward, honouring a lineage; the other looks sideways, finding connections across a cultural border that country music has not always been eager to acknowledge.
The Kacey Musgraves Intocable version of ‘Uncertain, TX’ is available now. Kacey Musgraves‘ Middle of Nowhere tour concludes in Seattle on 27 October.
