The Island Records-released Sam’s Town anniversary vinyl programme from The Killers takes three distinct forms: a numbered 2LP 45 RPM audiophile pressing, a Red Smoke 33 RPM edition, and a 7-inch box set collecting every single from the album’s original era. All are available to preorder now.
What the Sam’s Town Anniversary Vinyl Includes
The centrepiece of the release is the 2LP audiophile edition, mastered for vinyl and cut from assembled analogue masters by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound. Pressed at Optimal Media in Germany, it spreads the album across two 180-gram LPs at 45 RPM and is housed in a heavyweight gatefold jacket complete with an OBI strip and a 12-page booklet. The edition is numbered and limited to 4,000 copies worldwide, and adds the bonus track ‘Peace Of Mind’ to the original tracklist.
A separate Red Smoke edition uses the same mastering and cutting process but arrives on a single 180-gram LP at 33 RPM. Both pressings reflect a level of audiophile care that the original 2006 release, recorded in a different commercial context entirely, was never going to receive. There is something quietly telling about the gap between then and now: Sam’s Town was a record made under pressure, the follow-up to a debut that had redefined expectations, and it was not always treated generously at the time.
The 7-inch box set is limited to 2,000 copies and may be the most archivally interesting piece of the package. It collects the four singles issued during the album’s original campaign: ‘When You Were Young’, ‘Bones’, ‘Read My Mind’ and ‘For Reasons Unknown’, each paired with its original B-side. A fifth single features ‘Peace Of Mind’ backed by ‘Read My Mind’ (Like Rebel Diamonds Mix), which marks the first vinyl release of that particular mix. The five black-vinyl singles are housed in a top-loading box with a folded 14-inch-by-14-inch poster.
According to Consequence, the vinyl editions are set to ship on 27 November, with the 7-inch box set following on 29 January 2027.
The Album’s Place in The Killers’ Story
Sam’s Town was released in autumn 2006, the follow-up to Hot Fuss, made after The Killers returned to Las Vegas following a period of sustained touring behind their debut. The band worked with producers Alan Moulder and Flood, and the album spent 42 weeks on the Billboard 200. ‘When You Were Young’ and ‘Read My Mind’ remain among the band’s most enduring tracks.
The release dates carry their own context. As Albumism notes, the album first appeared in Japan on 27 September 2006, with the UK edition following on 2 October 2006. Those staggered release windows were typical of the era, a feature of a distribution model that streaming has since rendered largely obsolete. That the record is now being marked with a limited vinyl programme aimed at serious collectors speaks to how the market’s relationship with physical formats has transformed in the two decades since.
Sam’s Town has also aged into a more sympathetic critical light than it sometimes received at release. The ambition that initially attracted accusations of bombast now reads, to many ears, as exactly that: ambition, wielded without apology, rooted in the Springsteen-inflected heartland-rock tradition that the Las Vegas band was quite openly invoking. Moulder and Flood’s production, meticulous and wide-screen, is the kind that repays a proper vinyl pressing.
The Killers’ most recent studio album, Pressure Machine, was released in 2021, according to Consequence. These anniversary editions arrive, then, at a point when the band’s catalogue occupies a particular kind of mid-career retrospective attention, and the Sam’s Town anniversary vinyl format choices suggest Island and the band are treating the occasion seriously. The preorder is open now, with the box set the one for collectors to move on quickly given its 2,000-copy ceiling.
