Taylor Swift is releasing a Life of a Showgirl encore edition this Friday, expanding her 2025 Republic album with four new tracks, titled ‘Patient Zero’, ‘Cleveland!’, ‘Pink Clouding’ and ‘Babylon’, written during a post-release trip to Sweden with her collaborators Max Martin and Shellback. According to Variety, the four additions will appear as tracks 13 through 16 on the expanded edition.
How the Life of a Showgirl Encore Came to Exist
Swift explained the origins of the sessions in a post on Instagram. ‘About a year ago, you guys did a truly unfathomable thing,’ she wrote. ‘Something that completely blew my mind. You gave The Life of a Showgirl the biggest first week for an album in history. I took a trip to Sweden to celebrate with Max [Marti] and Shellback, my two collaborators on this album. Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: we wrote more songs. I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made.’
The phrasing matters: these were not leftover sessions or contractual additions, but songs written after the record had already landed and proved itself. There is something faintly unusual about that in the contemporary album cycle, where deluxe editions are more often assembled from vault material or scrapped singles than from a fresh creative response to an audience. The Sweden studio, apparently stumbled into almost by accident, produced four tracks that Swift felt warranted official release rather than casual circulation.
Limited CD singles of ‘Patient Zero’ will be available in separate acoustic and piano versions. Full ordering details are listed on Taylor Swift’s official site.
Martin and Shellback: A Partnership Deepened Over Decades
Martin and Shellback are not new arrivals in Swift’s studio life. The report notes they previously contributed to Red and Reputation, and their collective and individual credits also include work with Britney Spears, Ariana Grande and Adele. What Swift described on the New Heights podcast, co-hosted by her now-husband, NFL star Travis Kelce, was a sense of creative parity that had shifted across the years. ‘These guys, they’re just geniuses in different avenues and different ways,’ she said. ‘We had so much more dexterity to what we do. It’s almost like we’d all grown up so much. Shellback and I were in our early 20s when we started working together. This was the time when all three of us in the room were carrying the same weight as creators. We knew we had to bring the best ideas we’ve ever had. That effervescence has come through on this record. This is the record I’ve been wanting to make for a very long time, 12 songs for my 12th album.’
That framing, three collaborators arriving at genuine parity after years of working together at different stages of their respective careers, gives the Sweden sessions a particular texture. The encore edition is, in that reading, less a commercial move than a continuation of a working relationship that had finally found its fullest expression.
A Historic Night at the VMAs Approaches
The album news arrives days before Swift is due to receive the first Artist Director Honors at the MTV Video Music Awards, a new category recognising musicians ‘whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling.’ She has been nominated seven times for Best Director at the VMAs and won on four occasions, for clips including ‘All Too Well (10-Minute Version)’, ‘Anti-Hero’ and ‘Fortnight’.
Beyond the directorial honour, Swift carries 11 nominations this cycle, spanning Video and Artist of the Year, Best Pop, Direction, Art Direction, Cinematography, Editing, Choreography and Visual Effects. She already holds 30 competitive Moon Persons, meaning a single additional win on the night would make her the most-awarded artist in VMA history. Madonna currently leads with 13 nominations. The ceremony will be hosted by Snoop Dogg from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theatre.
For Swift, then, the weekend stacks two distinct but connected claims on attention: a studio document of gratitude, arriving as tracks 13 to 16, and a stage on which the scale of the original album’s reception may be formally ratified once more.
