Airstream SPIN Creative Camp Brought Four Artists to Nashville With Nothing Planned

The Airstream SPIN Creative Camp began, by design, with no brief, no deadline and no predetermined song. Four artists arrived at a caravan of Airstream trailers near Nashville, acoustic guitars in hand, and were simply left to see what the proximity of nature, unfamiliar surroundings and each other might produce.

The participants were Evan Honer, Bones Owens, Sierra Carson and Crystal Rose, each carrying a different set of influences and a different approach to the craft of songwriting. The camp was held over a weekend not far from the Grand Ole Opry, and the only instruction, if it could be called that, was to stop doing whatever they normally do and start paying attention to what might happen next.

What the Airstream SPIN Creative Camp Was Actually For

SPIN‘s Creative Director Danny Klein described the selection process plainly. ‘We really went out and tried to find four artists who come from different backgrounds, different genres, with different ways of exploring their creativity, making music and writing songs,’ he said. ‘To see what it’s like when you create, design, and conceive an environment that is geared towards optimising creative expression.’

The Airstreams themselves were central to that environment. They served as writing rooms, listening spaces, hangouts and temporary homes, with the artists moving freely between indoors and outdoors as ideas surfaced. The music that developed moved through Americana, country, blues and indie, but no specific sound was expected or sought. That hands-off approach gave the weekend a looseness that studio settings rarely permit, and rarely encourage.

For Bones Owens, whose 2024 track ‘Going Back Where I Came From’ and the track ‘Sunday Fix’ from his Best Western LP sit comfortably in the blues barnburner tradition, the Airstream’s design itself was part of the creative trigger. ‘I’ve always loved the design of Airstreams,’ he said. ‘It does inspire me to be more creative.’ He described the feeling of being inside one as a kind of emotional reset: ‘I’m ready to go take on the world. You’re feeling good. You’re feeling like, oh, this is nice.’

Sierra Carson, who released the folk-pop EP The Outside In in June, found her connection to the space running through the surrounding landscape. ‘Being able to stay in these Airstreams has been such a unique experience,’ she said. ‘There’s something to be said about existing in nature in a way that feels like you aren’t disturbing it.’ Writing outdoors, she noted how the polished exterior of the trailer became a mirror of the environment: ‘Rather than being reminded of where you came from, you’re kind of able to just exist where you are.’

Four Artists, Distinct Voices, One Shared Weekend

Crystal Rose, whose new single ‘Mad Black Woman’ is due soon, fuses rock, hip-hop, folk and gospel into soul-based songs. Evan Honer, an Arizona native best known for his 2022 cover of Tyler Childers’ ‘Jersey Giant’, brings a sound that moves between indie folk, alternative pop and country; he released his 4 Songs EP in August. Between the four of them, the Airstream SPIN Creative Camp had assembled a room in which almost no two reference points overlapped, which was precisely the intent.

Over the course of the weekend, conversations between Honer, Owens, Carson and Rose gave way to shared musical ideas, which in turn developed into songs. The moments between writing sessions, trading influences and simply getting to know one another, proved just as generative as the formal sessions themselves. A final performance closed the weekend, though the real payoff had come earlier: four musicians who might not otherwise have crossed paths had found a common musical language.

The concept, as articulated through this first event, is not limited to musicians. Airstream and SPIN have framed the Creative Camp as a format that could accommodate entrepreneurs, writers, designers, technologists and others whose work depends on generating something new. The Airstream, in this reading, is less a vehicle than a starting condition: it relocates people, physically and mentally, away from whatever habits are keeping them in place.
